Tell the NC Senate: Reduce plastic waste in our state agencies

Single use plastics are seemingly everywhere we go and hard to avoid. But, with studies estimating that humans eat an average of a credit card's worth of plastic every single week, we need urgent action to reduce our plastic waste and its environmental and health impacts anywhere we can.

A commonsense bill to reduce plastic waste in our state agencies passed the House with near unanimous support, but is now stalled in the Senate. Send a message now to tell the Senate Rules Chair to assign this bill to a committee to keep it moving before the end of the legislative session.

Plastic waste is a growing problem in our state and country. Single-use items used for just a few minutes last in our environment for hundreds of years, where they are overfilling our landfills, littering our roads and beaches, threatening human health in the form of microplastics, and costing taxpayers money to clean up at every step of the way.

Already many national corporations, as well as local NC businesses, have started to take steps to reduce their plastic usage and waste. It's time that our state agencies follow suit in doing their part to reduce plastic waste.

National polls have found that 8 in 10 Americans support action to reduce plastic waste and local surveys have shown that plastic pollution is among the top 5 water quality concerns for commercial and recreational fishermen.

In May, the House passed HB28, the Managing Environmental Waste Act, in a 117-1 vote. Now the bill sits with you. I am writing today to urge you to assign this bill to committee and give the Senate a chance to consider this critical issue.
